When a coating starts to rust, blister or flake prematurely, the first question is not “what should we repaint it with?” but “why did this happen?”. Without an answer, the new system will share the fate of the old one. We survey coatings, establish the causes and propose a repair method.
When a survey is needed
- the coating is failing earlier than expected;
- repair or repainting of an operating facility is planned and a strategy has to be chosen;
- a facility is being accepted after construction or refurbishment and the client wants to know the actual condition of the protection;
- fire protection has been damaged during erection, repair or operation;
- the client, the contractor and the supplier disagree about the causes of the defects.
What we assess
- degree of rusting, blistering, cracking, flaking and chalking — to ISO 4628;
- the actual thickness and adhesion of the coating, the make-up and sequence of the coats;
- the condition of the fire protection: thickness, continuity, delamination, wetting, damage to the topcoat;
- chemical damage to the coatings and linings of tanks, floors and drip trays;
- leaks and breakdown of waterproofing, the condition of joints and junctions;
- design-related causes: sharp edges, crevices, water traps, areas inaccessible for painting (ISO 12944-3).
Typical causes of failure
- inadequate surface cleaning, or salts left on the steel beneath the coating;
- application at an unsuitable temperature and humidity, or over condensation;
- coats that are too thin or too thick;
- incompatible materials within one system;
- a system not designed for the actual environment or temperature;
- mechanical and chemical damage in service.
There is usually more than one cause. The purpose of a survey is to separate them, so that the repair eliminates the causes themselves and not just their visible consequences.
How a survey is carried out
- We study the documents: the specification, the material documentation, the work logs and the acceptance certificates.
- We inspect the facility, take measurements and, where necessary, take samples for the laboratory.
- We analyse the results and establish the causes.
- We propose repair options — spot repair, repainting of individual areas or complete replacement of the system — with their advantages, limitations and surface preparation requirements.

- a report with a description of the defects, photographs and measurement results;
- conclusions on the causes of failure;
- repair recommendations and a description of the repair coating system;
- where required, an estimate of the scope of work for budget planning.
