Development of protection schemes: corrosion protection, fire protection, chemical protection and waterproofing

A protection scheme is not the name of a paint but a set of decisions: how to prepare the surface, which coats to apply and at what thickness, under what conditions, how to check the result and how to repair it later. We develop such schemes for steel and concrete — for the specific environment, the required service life and the real conditions on site.

Corrosion protection

For steel structures, equipment, tanks and pipelines:

  • we determine the corrosivity category to ISO 12944-2 (C1 to CX; Im1–Im4 for immersion) and the degree of aggressive exposure to ShNK 2.03.11-24;
  • we agree the required durability of the coating with you and select a system to match: primer, intermediate coats, topcoat, nominal and maximum thicknesses;
  • we specify the preparation grade and surface profile, and the requirements for edges and welds;
  • we split the work between the fabrication shop and the erection site: what is applied in the shop and what after erection, and how site connections and transport damage are made good;
  • for hot surfaces and surfaces under thermal insulation we select heat-resistant systems, and for galvanised steel — systems for painting over zinc.

The coating types are described in the “Corrosion protection” section.

Fire protection

  • we choose the method — a thin-film intumescent coating, a fire protection plaster, boards or a combined solution — according to the required fire resistance rating, the sections, the service conditions and the work programme;
  • we take the fire scenario into account: the standard curve for buildings, the hydrocarbon curve for facilities where flammable liquids and gases are processed and stored;
  • we coordinate the fire protection with the corrosion protection system: which primer is permitted under the fire protection compound, whether a topcoat is needed over it, and whether adhesion to an existing shop-applied coating needs to be tested;
  • for cable runs, service penetrations and ductwork, we select solutions tested specifically on such constructions.

We determine fire protection thicknesses by calculation for each section — see “Calculations and justification”. General information on the methods is given in the “Fire protection” section.

Chemical protection

For surfaces in contact with acids, alkalis, salt solutions, petroleum products and solvents:

  • internal linings of tanks and vessels, including those for chemical reagents;
  • protection of floors, drip trays, bunds, channels and sumps in areas where spills may occur;
  • coatings for equipment and structures in workshops with an aggressive atmosphere.

We choose the system on the basis of the questionnaire — the specific medium, concentration, temperature, thermal shock, mechanical loads and cleaning — not on a general description such as “chemical-resistant”. We consider epoxy and epoxy novolac systems, vinyl ester coatings, glass-flake compounds and reinforced linings. We separately specify the requirements for coating continuity and for curing before entry into service.

Waterproofing

  • foundations, basements and underground structures;
  • water tanks and reservoirs;
  • roofs and trafficable flat roofs;
  • movement joints, junctions and service penetrations.

We compare spray-applied membranes (polyurea, polyurethane), penetrating and brush-applied compounds and injection materials. The outcome is often decided not by the materials themselves but by the details and the substrate preparation, so we work these out separately. The materials are listed in the “Waterproofing” section.

What we consider in every scheme

  • the service environment and temperature, sunlight and UV, mechanical loads, washing and chemical cleaning;
  • the required service life and the possibility of repair without stopping production;
  • the application conditions: season, heat and dust, work in an operating plant or at height;
  • the compatibility of all coats, including materials from different manufacturers;
  • the availability of materials in Uzbekistan and delivery times;
  • the requirements of the client and of the codes to which the project was designed.

What you receive

  • a description of the protection scheme by zone and type of structure: surface preparation, coats, thicknesses, overcoating intervals, application conditions;
  • several equivalent options from different manufacturers, with their advantages and limitations;
  • a schedule of materials and quantities;
  • quality control and acceptance requirements;
  • recommendations for maintenance and repair of the coating.

Input data

  • drawings or a list of structures and equipment;
  • service conditions: indoors or outdoors, temperature, environment, contact with liquids;
  • project requirements: fire resistance rating, service life, codes, colour;
  • working conditions and schedule.

If some of the data is missing, we will tell you what to clarify with the designer or the process engineer.
