Painting specifications and technical documentation for coatings

A contractor is expected to provide not only materials but also documents: coatings are purchased, applied, inspected and accepted on the basis of them. We prepare documentation for protective coatings — from a painting specification for an entire facility to an inspection plan for a single type of work.

Documents we prepare

Painting specification

The principal coatings document for a facility. It typically contains:

  • scope: which structures, equipment and piping are painted and which are not, and where the equipment manufacturers’ requirements apply;
  • applicable codes and their order of precedence;
  • the climatic conditions of the site and the corrosivity categories by zone;
  • requirements for surface preparation, abrasive and application conditions;
  • a table of coating systems by surface type and operating temperature;
  • colour coding and identification marking;
  • quality control, acceptance and defect assessment criteria;
  • coating repair and requirements for as-built documentation.

Fire protection technical solutions

The adopted fire protection method and coating system, a list of the members to be protected, thickness and consumption calculations, application and service conditions, storage of materials, occupational health and safety requirements, and the procedure for thickness inspection and acceptance. The calculations, the application procedure and the manufacturer’s documents for the material are given in appendices.

Inspection and test plan (ITP)

A table of all the checks by stage of work: what is inspected, by what method and to which standard, how often, what the acceptance criterion is, who inspects, and at which stages work does not proceed without acceptance (hold, witness and review points). Report forms are attached to the plan.

Method statement

The sequence of work, equipment and materials, working conditions, inspection, and safety and environmental protection measures — for a specific type of work: abrasive blast cleaning, painting, application of fire protection, spraying of waterproofing.

Coating repair procedure

How to make good damage after transport, erection and welding, and how to repair the coating during the warranty period and in service.

Equivalence tables

A comparison of the materials in the original specification with those proposed as substitutes, and a comparison of the requirements of different codes — for discussion with the client. How such a discussion proceeds is described on the “Approval support” page.

How we prepare the documents

  • in Russian, English or both languages;
  • to the project’s template and numbering rules: title sheet, revision sheet, issue statuses — “for review”, “for approval”, “for construction”;
  • with references to specific clauses of standards rather than to standards “in general”;
  • with measurable acceptance criteria that can be checked with instruments on site.

Working with the designer and the main contractor

If the facility’s documentation is managed by a design organisation, we hand over the technical solutions and specifications in a format that is easy to include in the document set, and we answer its questions. If the documents are needed by a contractor, we agree their content with the main contractor in advance, so that nothing has to be redone after the first review.

What we need from you

  • the client’s or main contractor’s requirements for documents: templates, numbering, language;
  • the original specification or the project requirements for coatings;
  • a list of structures and the service conditions;
  • issue deadlines.
