Corrosion protection system selector to ISO 12944

Answer a few questions and the selector will show the corrosivity category of the environment, the required durability, the type of coating system and the catalogue materials used in such systems. An engineer will prepare a scheme with the number of coats, thicknesses and a material calculation based on your request.

If the coating is exposed to acids, alkalis, solvents or other chemicals, the system is selected not by the ISO 12944 category but by the questionnaire: fill in the chemical-resistant coating questionnaire.

How the selector works

The corrosivity category is determined to ISO 12944-2: from C1 for heated interiors with clean air to C5 for industrial areas with high humidity and for coastal areas. There is a CX category for extreme conditions and Im categories for water and soil. Durability is set to ISO 12944-1: L — up to 7 years, M — 7–15 years, H — 15–25 years, VH — more than 25 years. These two parameters determine which type of system is needed: an epoxy system, one with a polyurethane topcoat or one with a zinc-rich primer.

A system type is not yet a scheme. The number of coats and thicknesses, the surface preparation grade, compatibility with fire protection, application conditions and inspection depend on the specific facility. That is an engineer’s job.

What you receive on request

  • a coating scheme: coats, dry film thicknesses, surface preparation;
  • 2–3 system options from different manufacturers, with their advantages and limitations;
  • a material calculation for your quantities;
  • application and quality control requirements.
