Answer a few questions and the selector will show which type of fire protection suits your structure and conditions, together with materials from the catalogue. An engineer will calculate the fire protection thickness for your sections and the consumption from the steelwork schedule.
How the selector works
The type of fire protection depends on what is being protected, the fire type and the service conditions. For structural steel in buildings, the choice is usually between thin-film intumescent paints and non-reactive fire protection — plasters and boards. Oil and gas facilities need systems tested to the hydrocarbon curve and, where there is a risk of jet fire, systems tested for jet fire.
The fire protection thickness depends on the required fire resistance rating, the reduced metal thickness of each section, the critical temperature and the certificate of the specific material. That is why it is calculated from the steelwork schedule rather than taken “as usual”.
What you receive on request
- the type of fire protection and 2–3 materials from different manufacturers;
- thickness and consumption for the sections in your schedule;
- requirements for the primer, topcoat and application conditions;
- a list of material documents for approval.
The requirements of different countries are covered in the “Fire protection standards” section, and the service itself in the “Protective coatings engineering” section. Designers have a dedicated page.
