Injection, bonding and anchoring in concrete: EN 1504-4…7 and GOST

Four tasks — four parts of EN 1504

Filling cracks, bonding strengthening elements, anchoring new bars and protecting exposed reinforcement are different tasks with different materials and tests. In the European series they correspond to Parts 5, 4, 6 and 7, and in the interstate and Russian systems to separate standards.

Injection: EN 1504-5 and GOST 33762-2016

EN 1504-5:2013 distinguishes three categories of injection products: for force-transmitting filling of cracks, voids and interstices (F), for ductile filling (D) and for swelling filling (S). Routing out cracks and sealing them with an elastomeric sealant, and filling cavities outside the structure, are outside its scope.

GOST 33762-2016 “Requirements for injection sealing compounds and sealing of cracks, cavities and interstices” was drawn up on the basis of EN 1504-5:2013 with a non-equivalent degree of correspondence and has been in force in Russia since 01.01.2017; a correction to it was published in 2023, and Amendment No. 1 has applied since 01.06.2025. The standard divides seals into three groups:

  • AS — structural sealing with adhesive force-transmitting closure of the crack; cement-based and polymer-based compounds; methods 1.5, 4.5 and 4.6;
  • AG — non-structural sealing with adhesive sealing closure; polymer compounds; method 1.5;
  • KG — non-structural sealing with compression sealing closure; polymer compounds for which the degree of restrained swelling is specified; method 1.5.

Injection under pressure is provided for, as well as filling by gravity and by capillary suction. Outside the scope of the standard are routing with filling with an elastomeric sealant, temporary injections to stop water ingress, and injection from the side of the soil surrounding an underground or underwater structure. The list of basic and additional properties for group AS includes bond to concrete in pull-off and in slant shear, injectability into dry and wet cracks and bond after artificial ageing; for polymer compounds also the non-volatile content, viscosity, pot life and glass transition temperature, and for cementitious ones compressive strength, bleeding, volume change, chloride ion content and setting times.

Before a product is chosen, the survey must establish the width and depth of the crack, whether water is present and whether the crack is still opening. ShNK 1.04.01-23 requires the width and length of cracks to be marked on drawings and monitored with tell-tales or gauge marks. How products are selected to suit the width, moisture and movement of a crack is explained on the “Crack injection” page.

Structural bonding: EN 1504-4 and GOST 32943-2014

EN 1504-4:2004 sets requirements for the identification, performance (including durability) and safety of products used to bond structural materials to concrete. In Uzbekistan it has been adopted without changes as O’zMSt EN 1504-4:2025: the standard was prepared by technical committee for standardization STQ 21 “Construction and housing and communal services”, approved by Order No. 136/XSt of the Uzbek Institute of Standards of 29.12.2025, and has been in force since 29.01.2026.

GOST 32943-2014 “Requirements for adhesive joints of structural strengthening elements” (EN 1504-4:2004, NEQ) has been in force in Russia since 01.07.2015, and Amendment No. 1 since 01.06.2025. It covers external reinforcement by bonding rigid strips and by bonding with lamination of fabrics and meshes (method 4.3), as well as building up concrete by bonding precast elements or fresh concrete (method 4.4). A standard on adhesive joints does not replace the strengthening calculation — the design codes are collected on the “Strengthening with composites” page.

Anchoring of reinforcement: EN 1504-6 and GOST 34277-2017

EN 1504-6:2006 relates to method 4.2 — adding reinforcement in pre-formed or drilled holes — and assumes that the design and detailing are carried out by a qualified engineer on the basis of an assessment of the structure. Requirements for anchoring products to EN 1504-6:

Property Method Requirement
Pull-out resistance EN 1881 displacement of no more than 0.6 mm at a load of 75 kN
Chloride ion content EN 1015-17 no more than 0.05 %
Glass transition temperature — polymer products only EN 12614 not below 45 °C or 20 °C above the ambient temperature in which the structure operates, whichever is greater
Creep under sustained tensile load — polymer products only EN 1544 displacement of no more than 0.6 mm after 3 months under a load of 50 kN

GOST 34277-2017 “Requirements for anchoring compounds and adhesive force-transmitting fixings of strengthening elements” (EN 1504-6:2006, NEQ) has been in force in Russia since 01.03.2018. For method 4.2 it sets a similar set of properties — fixing strength under short-term pull-out load, creep under sustained load, chloride ion content, glass transition temperature — plus compressive strength, with its own test methods. Its scope covers anchoring compounds based on cement, on polymer-modified cement and on polymers, as well as polymer-cement compounds. Anchoring materials are collected in the “Anchoring and anchor grouting” section.

Reinforcement protection: EN 1504-7 and GOST R 59152-2020

EN 1504-7:2006 covers active and barrier coatings for protecting existing uncoated reinforcement in structures under repair; products for prestressing steel and stainless steel are outside its scope. Under GOST 32016-2012 these are methods 11.1 and 11.2 of the principle “control of anodic areas”; the third method of the same principle is corrosion inhibitors introduced into the concrete or applied to its surface.

GOST R 59152-2020 “Requirements for corrosion protection systems for steel reinforcement in concrete” (EN 1504-7:2006, NEQ) is a national standard of Russia, in force since 01.06.2021. Its subject is cementitious and polymer compounds, and coatings made from them, for bars and embedded items in reinforced concrete that is being repaired because of reinforcement corrosion, including underground and underwater structures; the standard lists the minimum required properties and the methods of checking them.

In Uzbekistan, ShNK 2.03.11-24 (clause 6) requires a corrosion inhibitor that protects the reinforcement or slows down its corrosion to be added both to the bar coating and to the concrete mix. In a survey to ShNK 1.04.01-23, the reinforcement is exposed at weakened locations — where the cover is delaminating and there are cracks along the bars and rust stains — and heavily corroded bars are cleaned to bright metal and their diameter is measured. The cleanliness grade of the steel before the protective product is designated to ISO 8501-1; guides to the application of EN 1504-10 mention Sa 2½ for barrier coatings and Sa 2 for active coatings, and the final requirement is taken from the product documentation. More details are on the “Reinforcement corrosion protection” page.

What applies in Uzbekistan

  • GOST 33762-2016, GOST 32943-2014 and GOST 34277-2017 are interstate standards. Their forewords do not list Uzbekistan among the states that voted for them, but the EASC catalogue lists the republic among the states that have joined them; check the date they were put into effect with the Uzbek Institute of Standards.
  • O’zMSt EN 1504-4:2025 is a national standard identical to EN 1504-4:2004.
  • EN 1504-5, EN 1504-6, EN 1504-7 and GOST R 59152-2020 apply if the design refers to them: as of October 2026, the catalogue of the research institute for technical norms and standardization of the Ministry of Construction contains no national adoptions of these parts.
  • For pull-off bond testing there is a national standard, O’zMSt EN 1542:2025.
