Fire protection, corrosion protection and grouts in Jizzakh Region

Jizzakh Region lies between the low mountains of the Turkestan Range in the south and the plain of Mirzachul — the Hungry Steppe — in the north. In recent years it has become one of the most dynamically developing industrial regions in the country: it accounts for a quarter of the national automotive industry, building materials production provides more than a fifth of the region’s industry, and projects are under way to mine tungsten and other metals (the President’s press service), while in 2025 industrial growth here was the highest among the regions — 114.3% (National Statistics Committee). The region’s agriculture depends on irrigation, with canals, pumping stations and drainage. For protective coatings this means two different scenarios: at a new plant, protection can be properly built in from scratch, while at water management facilities one has to fight water and salts.

New production facilities: protection is built in at the design stage

Workshops and warehouses with steel frames being built in the industrial zones are easiest to protect while they exist only in the drawings. What is worth deciding before the steel is ordered:

  • Required fire resistance ratings. These are set in the design on the basis of ShNK 2.01.02-04, according to the building’s degree of fire resistance and the fire hazard category of the production process. This determines whether a thin-film paint will be enough or boards and plasters will be needed — and how much this will weigh and how much space it will take up.
  • Where to apply. Fire protection and the corrosion protection system can be applied at the steel fabrication plant, where conditions and inspection are easier to maintain, with only damage repaired on site. This requires compatible materials and a repair scheme — we build it into the painting specification.
  • Design details. Connections without crevices and pockets, accessible for painting and with rounded edges, last longer than any paint — the principles are described in ISO 12944-3.
  • Cables and penetrations. Routes of cables and services through fire walls are better designed with fire-rated penetration details from the outset than broken through and sealed later.

At this stage our free express review of the design section is particularly useful — more for designers.

Mirzachul: water, salts and pumping stations

The Jizzakh irrigation zone is one of the largest in Central Asia without natural drainage, and water is removed by a collector and drainage network. On 75% of the irrigated land the groundwater mineralisation is 1.1–5.0 g/l, and more than 80% of the soils are saline to some degree (Kulmatov et al., 2020). Here the first things to deteriorate are not building frames but whatever is in contact with water and soil:

  • gates, trash racks, pipelines and pumping station casings — they need high-build epoxy systems for immersion in fresh water (category Im1 to ISO 12944-2);
  • buried pipes and vessels — coatings for category Im3, taking into account the chemical composition of the groundwater;
  • the concrete of foundations, flumes and wells — protection against sulphates and chlorides under ShNK 2.03.11-24, waterproofing and repair where reinforcement corrosion has already begun.

The atmosphere of the plain is dusty, with hot summers and cold winters: in July 2026 heat records were broken at the Dustlik and Arnasay stations — 44.8 °C and 46.5 °C — and in January 1969 Jizzakh saw −26.2 °C (Uzhydromet). Large-scale irrigation has noticeably increased air humidity in some districts of the region (national communication under the UNFCCC, 2024), so in the shoulder seasons condensation forms more often on cold steel, and the dew point is monitored especially strictly during painting. Strong gusts of wind raise dust, mudflows come down the northern slopes of the Turkestan Range, and the city of Jizzakh and the districts of the region have a seismicity of intensity 8 on the MSK-64 scale — this is set out in Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 727. For exposed structures the corrosivity category is, as a rule, C3–C4; it is checked at the specific facility to ISO 9223/ISO 12944-2.

Equipment installation at new plants

Every new production facility means dozens of units on foundations: pumps, compressors, lines, presses, mills. The grout is chosen according to the load and the start-up date: under static supports and column bases, a non-shrink cementitious grout; under vibrating machines, an epoxy grout. The equipment supplier’s installation documentation often names the type or grade of grout explicitly; if that grade is not available, we select a substitute with comparable properties and explain the difference. There is also an online grout selector for this.

Documents for commissioning

A new plant is handed over not only for its equipment but also for its coatings. For anti-corrosion work, Construction Regulation QR 04.01-23 requires a work log, reports on the prepared substrate and intermediate coats, and a final report with checks of continuity, adhesion and thickness — for more detail, see the overview of corrosion protection standards in Uzbekistan. For fire protection, acceptance requires the documents for the material, thickness measurements for each member and certificates of completed work. It is easier to keep these records as the work proceeds than to reconstruct them before the acceptance committee.

How to start working with us

We bring materials to Jizzakh and to the industrial zones and districts of the region; the delivery schedule is coordinated with installation. For new plants we offer a full cycle: protection scheme, fire protection calculation, specification, trial area and technical supervision during application.

Similar water management tasks are covered for Syrdarya Region, and tourist and industrial facilities of the neighbouring region for Samarkand Region; all pages are in the “Regions” section.

Questions about projects in Jizzakh Region

When should a coatings engineer be brought into the construction of a workshop?

Ideally at the design stage, before the steelwork is ordered: then fire protection and corrosion protection can be applied at the plant and the thicknesses calculated for the actual sections. A solution can also be found at the erection stage, but the choice will be narrower.

How should the steel of a pumping station that is permanently in water be protected?

With a system for immersion in fresh water, with surface preparation by abrasive blast cleaning. If the water is mineralised or carries abrasive suspended solids, this is taken into account when choosing the material and thickness.
