Fire and corrosion protection in Namangan Region

Namangan Region occupies the north of the Fergana Valley and the foothills of the Kurama and Chatkal ranges. The textile industry provides a third of industrial output and half of exports here, machine building, metallurgy, light industry and services have officially been named the drivers of development, and orchards and fruit and vegetable processing are the region’s traditional specialisation. Namangan is the country’s second most populous city, so there is a great deal of both housing and social construction in the region. Hence the typical projects: cold stores and fruit and vegetable warehouses, processing workshops, sewing and textile mills, schools, hospitals, shopping centres. Each of them has its own weak point when it comes to protection.

Cold stores and fruit and vegetable warehouses

A cold store is one of the most treacherous facilities for steel. It is hot outside and cold inside, and at the boundary there is condensation. It forms on steel columns and bracing that pass through the thermal envelope, in loading areas where the doors open, and in the chambers while the air coolers are defrosting. What to take into account:

  • steelwork inside and at the boundary of the cold envelope is protected as for a humid environment with periodic condensation — with a full multi-coat epoxy system, not a single coat of primer-enamel;
  • ammonia refrigeration plants add a chemical factor — machine rooms and pipelines need coatings resistant to ammonia, and systems under thermal insulation need protection against corrosion under insulation;
  • warehouse frames with a high fire load of packaging and containers are protected against fire to the design requirements, and sandwich panels and their fixings are considered together with the frame;
  • under refrigeration compressors — an epoxy grout that withstands vibration and is resistant to oils.

Light industry and processing

Sewing and textile production, fruit drying and processing, canning and juice workshops are facilities with a high fire load or constant humidity, and often with both at once. For frames we select fire protection with a thickness calculation for the sections, for cable routes fire protection coatings, and for workshops with washdown, systems that withstand water and cleaning agents. Floors in food workshops are a separate topic; the section on resin flooring is being expanded.

Residential and public buildings

In multi-storey apartment buildings, schools, outpatient clinics and shopping centres, fire protection is most often needed for the steel elements of frames and roofs, stairs, ductwork and service penetrations. The roofs of low-rise buildings are often built on timber rafters: if the design requires their fire hazard to be reduced, fire-retardant impregnations with a confirmed efficiency group are used, and the application rate stated in the product documents is observed.

Foothills: climate and seismicity

The region’s climate is continental: summers are hot and dry, winters cool with snow and frosts, and spring and autumn bring changeable weather. In July 2026 the Namangan station set a new temperature record of 44.2 °C (the previous one, 42.5 °C, had stood since 2007), and in January 1969 it was −25.8 °C here (Uzhydromet). Two seasons are dangerous for coatings: summer overheating of steel during application, and the damp shoulder seasons, when cold steel becomes covered with dew in the morning. Exposed structures in urban environments and at industrial sites are, as a rule, category C3–C4, but for each facility it is determined separately, to ISO 9223 and ISO 12944-2.

In the list of seismically active territories approved by Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 727 in November 2025, Namangan and Chartak are listed with an intensity of 8–9 on the MSK-64 scale, and Chust and most districts of the region with intensity 9. Mudflows add to this: the largest number of mudflow events has been recorded on the south-eastern slopes of the Chatkal Range in Namangan Region (Third National Communication under the UNFCCC). For coatings this is not critical, but for fixings it very much is: the anchoring of equipment, racking and tanks is carried out to the designer’s calculation, with materials whose performance under seismic loads has been confirmed (see anchoring).

How we work with projects in the region

We fulfil orders for materials with delivery to Namangan, Chust and other towns in the region, including small volumes if they make up a complete system. For developers and designers we calculate fire protection from the steelwork schedule and review the design section; for enterprises we select repair systems and carry out surveys of coatings that have started to fail.

On mechanical engineering and anchoring in the neighbouring region, see Andijan Region; on chemicals and oil refining in the valley, see Fergana Region; all regions are on the general page.

Questions about projects in Namangan

How can the frame of a cold store be protected from condensation?

With a multi-coat system for a humid environment applied after abrasive blast cleaning, and with design measures — no thermal bridges through the steel where they can be avoided. Columns that pass through the thermal envelope are protected particularly carefully.

Is fire protection of timber rafters mandatory?

This is determined by the design, based on the building’s structural fire hazard class and the requirements of the codes. If fire protection is needed, it is confirmed by a tested product and a certificate of completed work.

How should the pipelines of an ammonia refrigeration plant be protected?

Cold pipelines under insulation “sweat”, and moisture stays against the steel for months, so the system under the insulation must be designed for a low operating temperature and condensation. Exposed sections in the machine room are protected with a coating resistant to ammonia and washdown. We select the material according to the operating temperature and the defrost regime.
